About Me
Professor Deshmukh is one of the most accomplished, admired, insightful, and effective leaders in Indian higher education. He is widely respected in India and abroad for his enviable professional standing by bringing forth his notable achievements in the field of scientific research, academic leadership as well as policy advocacy and development. The profile of Prof. Sanjay Deshmukh incessantly reminds us of his enviable professional standing by evoking his outstanding achievements.
Professor Deshmukh has field-level research experience at national and international levels spanning over 50 countries including visits to over 60 international Universities and organizations, and a proven track record in resource mobilization, alliance building, and fundraising. Along with Prof. M.S. Swaminathan, he originated the global coastal and marine ‘hotspot’ strategy for conservation planning, which generated over US $ 500m for global conservation activities- the largest sum ever assigned to a single strategy. He is also known for bringing pioneering reforms in academic, financial, and administrative domains as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mumbai with fund generation of over 800 Crore Indian Rupees for the execution of its development plan.
He is the only faculty of the University of Mumbai and probably in India, with a unique distinction as a recognized Ph.D. Guide in five subjects, viz., Botany, Life Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Biotechnology (at the University of Mumbai) as well as in Geography (at Ohio State University, Columbus – Ohio, USA).
For field research and academic collaborations, Professor Deshmukh has extensively traveled in over 50 countries and visited almost an equal number of international Universities and organizations. Through extensive research collaborations, he has successfully endeavored to link the ecological foundations of biology with agriculture, medicine, science, industry, and society. Through 34 research projects and several consultancies with cumulative grants close to INR 170 million, Professor Deshmukh has supported over 20 doctoral, post-doctoral, and Pool Officer level researchers, who have to their credit him, over 200 research publications.
During 2005-2010, Professor Deshmukh was President of an NGO ‘Konkan Nisarg Manch’ which was recognized for taking Technology and Research from “Lab to Land” for enhancing rural livelihoods.
- Best Village Development Award in NGO Category, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of Maharashtra’ in November 2010.
- Best Village Industries Development Project Award (2009), Ministry of MSMI, GOI in August 2009.
Professor Deshmukh is an elected Fellow of several scientific bodies/ academies such as Mangrove Society of India (MSI), Goa, India (2017); National Environmental Science Academy (NESA), New Delhi India (2014); International Society for Science and Technology (ISST), Mumbai, India (2011); LEAD-India (Leadership in Environment and Development), New Delhi, India (2006); Fellow of Society of Biosciences, India (1997), to name a few.
In recognition of his long and dedicated service to the cause of the application of science and technology for securing sustainable livelihoods in general and for his impeccable contributions in taking the University of Mumbai to greater heights earned Professor Deshmukh, two honorary DSc Degrees- in 2017 and 2020 by Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University, Faizabad, U.P., and University of Science & Technology Meghalaya respectively.
