Professor Deshmukh is the only Teacher in University system to have recognition as PhD Supervisor in 5 subjects, viz., Geography (Ohio State University, Columbus Ohio, USA), Botany, Life Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Biotechnology (University of Mumbai, Mumbai).

Professor Deshmukh has worked on diverse research areas, such as genetic resources conservation, biodiversity, sustainable management of natural resources, environmental economics, preparation of management plans of marine protected areas (biosphere reserves in particular), design and management of developmental organisations and voluntarism. This can be grouped in to three categories:
